Classic Russian Cooking: Elena Molokhovet’s A Gift to Young Housewives, 1992: Book translated, Introduced, and Annotated by Joyce Toomre. Published by Indiana University Press, Bloomington, Indiana in 1992. Part of the Indiana-Michigan Series in Russian and East European Studies, this cookbook is a hard cover book with dust jacket. 680 pages. Both the dust jacket and the book are in as-if-new condition. Definitely gift quality.
Toomre was a scholar at Harvard University and Radcliffe College, and she treated this translation as a scholarly work. She wrote an 88-page introduction about the Russian culinary history, complete with footnotes and a spectacular bibliography. Molokhovet’s cookbook itself is incredibly extensive. She begins with evening tea and the arrangement of the kitchen. She begins with soups and ends with fast day small baked goods. She has chapters on aspics and chapters on mazurkas, chapters on sugarless vodkas and chapters on gingerbreads, chapters on vinegars and chapters on mazurkas.
