County Recipes of Old England, 1929, Stated First Edition, First Printing: Charming cookbook compiled by Helen Edden and illustrated by Tony Burge. Published in 1929 by Country Life Ltd, London. The recipes are from every county in England, plus Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and they include recipes like Slip Coat Cheese, Lamb’s Fry, Folkestone Pudding Pies, Simnel Cakes, Melton Mowbry Pork Pies, Brawn, Norfolk Biffins, Pan Haggerty, Somerset Frumentry, Bath Chaps, Bath Polonies, Lardy Johns, Firmety, Colcannon, and Huish Cakes. Edden includes bits of folklore and local history related to the recipes. The most charming part of the book, however, are the illustrations. Burge’s drawings are always clever and often quite funny. This cookbook is a hardback book with 110 pages. It is in good vintage condition. The cover is worn and stained. Some pages have light stains. The binding is weak, but holding.
